Who was Janie F. Allsbrook?

A native of Tarboro, Janie Fairley Allsbrook was born April 6, 1913, to Sallie Roberson and Richard Gold Allsbrook. She attended the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC Greensboro) where she majored in English and Library Science.  After a working several years in school libraries in Lexington and Wilmington, NC, she came back to Tarboro and became County Librarian at the Edgecombe Public Library in 1941. 

Janie began the first bookmobile route for Edgecombe County in 1941, instigated the growth of facilities and services, and collected many items pertaining to local history that became the basis for the present local history collection.  She served for 29 years until her retirement on June 30, 1970.

Janie passed away February 15, 1986.
